Exposure Camp

During the Spring of 2011 after teaching Social Media : Creating Buzz for Your Brand  for the third year at the Fashion Institute of Technology I started thinking about how amazing it would be if the youth of today were exposed to social media from a producer standpoint versus simply consuming. While the youth of today are on Facebook and twitter and are familiar with blogs they do not understand the power they have through this new medium. My desire is to expose the youth that do not have the resources and access to computer and gaming camps or the knowledge of the power of social media to its potential with introductory exposure camps.

The camps will be a  3 hour session with the purpose of:

  • Exposing: Introduce new concepts, technologies and potential uses  for social media
  • Educating: Teach how to create a respectable digital footprint and the power of expression through technology
  • Awareness: Introduce non conventional yet creative careers in technology, graphic design and animation
  • Collaborate: Illustrate the power of creating, consulting and researching with others online

Program Overview

The camps are held in community centers and recreation centers free of charge for 5-20 kids at a time. The class is 3 hours long and for 12-17 year olds. Currently the camp is conducted with a laptop and projector and starts by creating an interactive experience that begins with Q&A that explores the interests of the participants. The participants are allowed to share their goals and interests and a brief introduction for the first 15 minutes where we will be using real life socialization to demonstrate how it translates to online behavior. The students will then pair with those with similar interests and create groups.

The course outline is as follows:
