28 Days of Diversity in Design would become the answer to the industry question “Where do we find designers of color?”

My answer: we outchea

I had been working in design for just shy of 10 years, having transitioned from designing a home furnishings brand and started a design blog —–

The blog chronicled product and interior designs from designers of color throughout the world. During February for kicks and giggles I decided to highlight a designer a day and hashtagged the posts on twitter #diversityanddesign and #28daysofdiversityindesign

What followed: As we neared the end of February educators, journalists, bloggers and designers started asking me what’s next, how can they continue to learn about all of these designers they had never heard of. So I packaged the posts into an e-book and shared it with people who had been asking, people started sharing it, retweeting and connecting with me. Many featured were thankful and others were curious.

Lets Talk Diversity in Design: I use the momentum to start a dialogue on diversifying the press and exposure of designers of color. I hosted a Diversity and Design conversation during NY Design week, I was invited to HGTV to talk diversity as well as my interest in hosting a show. Conversations began with media outlets and I was able to bring a ton of brilliant underexposed designers together to the table with media outlets that were interested in bringing more diversity to their projects and pages. One of the biggest champions and allies of diversifying design became Grace Bonney who continuously credits my openness and our candid convos about what she and other journalists were missing have made me grateful for these convos and this work.
